Thematic Areas

1. Civic education -AMKA civic education activities are aimed at empowering citizens specifically women, girls youth and PLWD’s to be able to participate effectively in the way they are governed.

2. Women and Creative Expression: This involves the following:

i) Documenting and facilitating publications of creative works by budding women writers.
ii) Publishing real-life stories of women’s experiences.

3. Lobbying and advocacy for women’s rights and their empowerment to access good governance

4. Conflict resolution and peace building: training of community leaders, women and youth in conflict-prone areas on conflict resolution and peace building. /br>
5. Social and Economic empowerment of women through information, funding and training.

6. Constitutionalism. Through improving governance and enhanced realization of human rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS OF AMKA IN PROMOTING THE REALIZATION OF WOMEN, YOUTH, AND PLWD’S RIGHTS

1. AMKA has implemented URAIA National Response Initiative in Nyeri that was aimed at responding to the needs of the internally displaced women following post-election violence of 2007/08 in Kenya 2. Lobbying and Advocacy (Gender &Poverty, Policy & Governance-closing the gap) which aimed at highlighting the engendered nature of poverty and creating space for women to engage policy makers. 3. Conducted series of dialogues in collaboration with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission in Murang’a County targeting women, men and youth. 4. Community Dialogue Forums – AMKA conducted community dialogue forums in Murang’a County funded by National Cohesion and Integrated Commission (NCIC). The dialogues were on the emergency of militia groups, unemployment, poverty, gender-based violence and landlessness. AMKA targeted women, girls, leaders, and youth. 5. Documentation and Publishing: a publication of the other side of the prison – The role of women left Behind done in collaboration with ABANTU for Development. The project documented the experiences of women in the fight for the second liberation and also highlighted women’s leadership roles in defending their rights. Readings and publication of short stories of budding women and girls writers which include; Fresh Paint Vol. I-Literary Vignettes by Kenyan Women; and Fresh Paint Vol. II-Telling Our Stories into the 21st Century. These two volumes are creative expressions of budding women writers. 6. Skill development – The ongoing collaboration between AMKA and Goethe on creative writing that has been ongoing for 8 years. The forums take place monthly where writing skills are offered and has produced many award-winning published women writers. This feminist forum is open to both women and men. 7. Anasoma project – AMKA in collaboration with Worldreader carried out the Anasoma project initiative whose main aim was to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment through digital reading. The aim of the project as a whole was to improve the World reader library by introducing new content that challenges women’s traditional roles in society that can positively influence gender social norms and stereotypes. The project culminated in five manuscripts published both in print and on the World reader Mobile Application. 8. Book review – AMKA conducted a Book Review exercise that engaged a group of volunteers with an academic background in Gender Studies to form a panel that would screen the content of 25 empowering books using a gender analysis tool aimed at introducing new content that challenges women’s traditional roles in the society that can positively influence gender social norms and stereotypes. 9. AMKENI Wakenya (UNDP) five-year project that focused on improved governance and enhanced realization of human rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
